Best Dive Bars in NYC – Cheap Drinks and Good Vibes

Best Dive Bars in NYC

Forget the $22 cocktails. NYCs best nights happen in dive bars — sticky floors, cheap beer, good jukebox, and characters you will never forget. Here are the spots where real New Yorkers drink.

Manhattan

1. Rudy Bar and Grill (Hells Kitchen)

Free hot dogs. Yes, free. Pitchers of Rudy Blonde for under $15. Cash only, no pretense, been here since 1933. The backyard is a hidden gem in summer.

2. Milano Bar (NoLita)

Looks like it hasnt changed since 1880 (it hasnt). Cheap drinks, Christmas lights year-round, and a crowd that ranges from construction workers to models.

3. International Bar (East Village)

Narrow, dark, cheap. $5 beers, a pool table in the back, and the kind of bartenders who remember your name after one visit.

4. Ear Inn (SoHo)

One of the oldest bars in NYC (1817). Cheap beer, live music on weekends, and a haunted upstairs. The burger is surprisingly good.

5. Subway Inn (Upper East Side)

Relocated from its original 60th Street spot but kept the neon sign and the attitude. Strong drinks, old-school vibes, no tourists.

Brooklyn

6. Sunny Bar (Red Hook)

A legendary Red Hook institution. Cash only, cheap beer, and a backyard that feels like youre not in NYC anymore. Live music on weekends.

7. Turkey Nest (Williamsburg)

Frozen margaritas in styrofoam cups for $5. Pool table, jukebox, and a crowd thats been coming here since before Williamsburg was cool.

8. Frank Bar (Bushwick)

$4 PBR, a solid jukebox, and the kind of place where you walk in alone and leave with five new friends.

Queens

9. Dutch Kills Centraal (Long Island City)

Not exactly a dive but dive-priced happy hour. $6 cocktails from 4-7 PM in a neighborhood thats getting expensive fast.

10. Donovan Bar (Woodside)

An old Irish pub where pints are still under $6 and the regulars have been coming for decades. Cash only.

Dive Bar Survival Tips

  • Always carry cash — half of these are cash only
  • Dont ask for a cocktail menu. Beer, whiskey, or leave.
  • Tip $1 per drink minimum — bartenders remember
  • The bathroom will be questionable. Accept it.
  • If theres a jukebox, play something good or face judgment
